Set in a time of starvation, the Survivalist lives off a small plot of land hidden deep in the forest.[8] Living off the grid the survivalist relies on primal instinct and his wits to stay alive.[9] A starving woman and a girl she says is her daughter come about his refuge, initially seeking to trade.[10] Naturally suspicious of all strangers, he strikes a bargain for bed and board, while sharing his bed with the daughter.[11] This generates a tense ongoing arrangement in a kill or be killed world.[12]
