Set in
Burleson,
Texas, in 2011, the film centers on a 10-year-old girl named Anna Beam (
Kylie Rogers), daughter of Christy Beam (
Jennifer Garner). Anna is suffering from a
pseudo-obstruction motility disorder and is unable to eat, using feeding tubes for nutrition. Upon checking at the local hospital, they find no signs of illness but say it's "acid reflux" or "lactose intolerance", but Christy is not convinced by this. Hoping to discover what is the cause of her disease, Christy and Anna travel to
Boston despite not having an appointment with the pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Nurko.
When she is subsequently examined at
Boston Children's Hospital, evidence of the chronic illness is found. She goes through extensive treatment. During this ordeal, Anna and her mother befriend a local Massachusetts resident named Angela, as well as Ben and his sick daughter, Haley.
One day, Anna falls into the hollow of a three-story tree and she has
near-death experience. Anna is miraculously healed of her disease, because she had fallen and hit her head just right. At church, Christy shares the story of how God miraculously healed her through love. As Christy finishes her speech, one of the congregation protests, stating that she does not believe Christy. Ben, who traveled from Boston upon hearing the story about Anna, believes her and tells her that his daughter Haley died peacefully because Anna gave her faith earlier when in the hospital.

In 2012, Benghazi, Libya is named one of the most dangerous places in the world, and countries have pulled their embassies out of the country in fear of an attack by militants. The United States, however, still has a diplomatic compound (not an official embassy) open in the city. Less than a mile away is a not-so-secret CIA outpost called "The Annex", which is protected by a team of private military contractors from Global Response Staff made up of former military special operations personnel. New to the detail is Jack "Da" Silva (Krasinski), who arrives in Benghazi and is picked up by
Tyrone S. "Rone" Woods (Dale), a member of the team and a personal friend of Silva. Arriving at the Annex, Da Silva is introduced to the rest of the team and the chief (Costabile), who constantly gives the team strict reminders to never engage the citizens to avoid conflict with local militants in the area.
The
U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens (Letscher) arrives in Benghazi to maintain diplomatic connections amidst the political and social chaos. Despite warnings, Ambassador Stevens decides to stay at the Special Mission with limited protection from a pair of
Diplomatic Security (DS) agents and guards hired from the local
February 17th Martyrs Brigade militia, nicknamed "17-Feb". On the morning of the eleventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Stevens notices suspicious men taking pictures of the compound and notifies his security detail. Back at the Annex, the GRS team communicates with their families and Da Silva finds out that his wife is pregnant.
That night, a group of Islamist militants from
Ansar al-Sharia assault the compound. Unwilling to work as protective guards for $28 a day, the local 17-Feb guards quickly surrender their posts, allowing the attackers easy access to the Special Mission compound. Scott Wickland (Giuntoli), a Diplomatic Security agent, takes Stevens and an officer, Sean Smith, into the safe room. Unable to breach the safe room, the attackers set the building on fire hoping to burn the men out. Wickland is able to escape but loses both Stevens and Smith. At the Annex, the GRS team desperately wants to go to the compound to help, but the chief refuses, fearing that the GRS team's departure would leave the Annex vulnerable. Refusing to listen, the GRS team dispatches to the compound and meets up with the DS agents. Silva and Woods go into the building to try to find Stevens and Smith, but are only able to find Smith, who has died from smoke inhalation. The team retreats back to the Annex. The team from the compound also follows suit, but after Wickland goes in the wrong direction, they are followed back to the Annex.
Knowing an attack by the militants is imminent, the staff of the CIA Annex make several desperate calls for help. The only help they can get is from
Glen "Bub" Doherty(Stephens), a Global Response Staff officer, who forms a team including two
Delta operators that flies to Benghazi after several delays. Meanwhile, the GRS team fends off the militants as they try to breach the Annex perimeter late into the night. As the attackers regroup after failed assaults, the GRS team takes time to regroup as well, and the downtime allows them to think about their families while considering the gravity of the situation. After repelling the largest attack wave, the Annex receives word from
ISR that help is en route.
With the GRS team compromised, and the Annex now vulnerable, the remaining GRS operators watch as a convoy of vehicles rolls toward the Annex. Fearing the worst, the operators prepare to make a final stand, until it is revealed that the convoy is an element of the
Libya Shield Force militia escorting the GRS reinforcements. They also find out that Stevens was found behind the compound, but was pronounced dead at the hospital from smoke inhalation. The militants launch a mortar attack that wounds one of the DS agents and kills both Woods and Doherty. As the remainder of the team wait at the airstrip with the bodies of Stevens, Smith, Woods and Doherty, they reflect on the events that happened and how they will most likely receive no recognition for defending the Annex as they were off the books. Closing titles reveal that all of the surviving members of the Annex security team received medals in a private ceremony and have since retired from the GRS team and live with their families.

The film opens into the life of Shivangi, princess of a
Rajasthan royal house (in
Sikar), now living in
London with her husband Kunwar Veer Singh. They make a happy home until one day when Veer develops a minor illness that soon flares up into a wasting disease shriveling his body and shrinking his head. Veer is hospitalized and his symptoms worsen - his body begins to contort unnaturally and he begins growling in strange languages. The doctors seem to diagnose it as
tetanus (no cure available). Shivangi is frightened; Veer is just not the same and Shivangi's handmaiden, Kesar Ma, quickly calls it
black magic.
Kesar Ma thinks it is because Veer's father, the King, had two wives and the second wife wanted Veer, the heir, out of the way. The film moves to Rajasthan. Shivangi with her family visits an exorcist for Veer's condition. This exorcist attempts to confront the witch by entering the other realm (through a mirror) but is soon thrown out, too powerless for the witch. The exorcist refers the King to the most powerful spiritual master in the land, Mewar Baba, also known as Jai Singh Gujjar. In other part of Rajasthan Jai Singh Gujjar (Mewar Baba) a former convict, arrives and successfully performs the exorcism on a girl possessed by an evil spirit.
Shivangi shudders on hearing about Jai. She was deeply in love with Jai some years ago. Her uncle saw them together and tried to blackmail the helpless and beautiful Shivangi into sleeping with him. Jai stepped in between and fought off the uncle who promptly reported the matter to the King. Jai was charged with attempted murder. Shivangi inexplicably stood as witness against Jai and Jai was ultimately sent to jail for five years. Now Shivangi has come back to ask Jai to help her save her husband. Jai flatly refuses but Shivangi pleads and persuades him. Jai finally agrees to come to London.
Jai investigates the matter and discovers that Veer's troubles began upon receiving a strange amulet as a gift from an unknown admirer in Rajasthan. The amulet transmitted the witch demon into Veer. Jai prepares Shivangi into reciting a spiritual chant to bind the witch to their mansion so Jai can throw the locket into the
Thames river, thereby freeing Veer. Shivangi maintains the chant over the witch's attempt to thwart it and Jai finishes the job. But it is revealed that the amulet and the witch were actually dispatched by Jai! As Jai prepares to leave London, Shivangi confronts him. (How did he know the amulet came from a specific person?) Jai admits his vengeance saying that he wanted Veer dead. Shivangi reveals why she had betrayed him many years ago. When their affair was revealed the King had ordered Jai killed. Shivangi begged for his life and it was granted for the price of her betrayal. Now guilty and dismayed, Jai resolves to stay in London and free Veer from the witch.
Jai prepares his final assault on the witch. Jai invokes his own spiritual master through a letter. The master chastises Jai for acting in haste and then regretfully says that the witch will not leave without taking a soul. The master directs Jai to an abandoned church where he receives a set of charmed
Celtic daggers. Jai prepares a charm to attack the witch. He enters the witch's realm and recovers the amulet. The witch attacks ferociously and is about to stop Shivangi when Jai smashes the mirror (thus closing the portal) so Shivangi can burn the amulet and free her husband. Shivangi sees Jai smile peacefully as Veer comes to life. Some weeks later, Veer and Shivangi find the letter of correspondence between Jai and his master. Jai had offered his soul so Veer could be freed. Veer is touched and places Jai's photograph upon his mantelpiece as the film ends.

But the film unfolds in non-linear fashion, with the other half of the scenes taking place later in Paris, where Elsa learns she’s pregnant (we don’t know whom from yet), and meets Ma Rong’s younger brother Ma Jianmin (Liu Ye), an undocumented tattoo artist who marvels at her skin and offers to adorn her back with a tattoo of a night peacock, a beautiful but rare and short-lived butterfly. Soon, Elsa and Jianmin are in love.

In France, a widowed merchant (André Dussollier) is forced to sell his estate after his ships are lost at sea, leaving him bankrupt. He moves to a simple house in the countryside with his six children, though the only one happy with the change is his youngest daughter, Belle (Léa Seydoux). In town, the merchant is forced to flee into the forest when Perducas (Eduardo Noriega) threatens to harm him over his son's debts.
While lost in the forest, the merchant stumbles upon the magical domain of the Beast (Vincent Cassel). The merchant is confronted by the Beast when he tries to take a single red rose for Belle. As price for nabbing one of his roses, the Beast demands the merchant's servitude or his family will be killed. The Beast gives the merchant one day's leave to say goodbye to his children. Learning of her father's fate, Belle, feeling responsible, steals her father's horse and returns to the castle to take her father's place.
At the castle, Belle is given luxurious goods and allowed to roam the grounds, but must return every evening for dinner with the Beast. The Beast asks Belle if she will love him, but she rejects him. At night, Belle has vivid dreams about the castle as it used to be, and of the Prince who used to live in it. The Prince was in love with a Princess (Yvonne Catterfeld), who agreed to bear him a son if he promised to stop hunting an elusive golden deer, saying that his obsession keeps him away from her.
Belle makes the Beast a proposal: she will dance with him, if she is allowed to see her family one last time. The two begin to dance, and the Beast once again asks for Belle's love. Jarred, Belle demands to see her family as she had bargained. The Beast is apathetic. Belle fervently rejects the Beast for his deception, saying he will always disgust her. The same night, she witnesses the Beast prey upon and devour a hog. She is shocked and attempts to escape by running into the enchanted forest. Beast chases then catches her on a frozen lake. He climbs on top of her and tries to kiss her as the lake begins to crack under their weight. The ice gives weigh and Belle becomes submerged. The Beast pulls her from the water, and returns her to the castle.
When Belle awakes the next morning, the Beast agrees to let her return home. He repeats that she must return to him or that he will 'die' from the loss of her. Belle arrives home, where she finds her father is bedridden and her siblings are hiding from Perducas. Belle's eldest brother takes a jewel from her clothing, and posits whether the castle may contain further treasures. He goes to Perducas and his men, offering the riches of the castle as payment for his debt. The group travel to the castle and raid it, pulling a golden arrow held by a statue.
Belle has a final dream about how the Prince broke his promise and killed the golden deer with the golden arrow. While dying, the deer transformed into the Princess, who revealed that she had been a forest nymph all along, allowed to take human form in order to experience love. Her father, the god of the forest, punished the Prince by transforming him into the Beast, the dogs into small creatures named Tadommes, and his friends into statues. The god of the forest resounded that only the love of a woman would break the Beast's eternal curse.
She races to the castle after her brothers, arriving just as the Beast is about to kill them for intruding. The Beast stops his attack when Belle begs for mercy. Perducas uses the golden arrow to stab the Beast, mortally wounding him. Belle and her brothers carry the Beast into the castle as vines begin to overtake it. They place the Beast into a magical healing well. Dying, the Beast asks whether Belle could ever love him, and she counters that she already does. The Beast sinks into the water, and when he rises up he has transformed back into the Prince. The vines recede, the statues crumble, and the Tadommes return to dogs.
The film ends with the story being told by Belle to her two young children. They are living in the same countryside house with Belle's father. Belle goes outside to greet her husband, the Prince, and the two kiss and embrace.
